Learning To Play Blues Guitar: 4 Tips For Playing With Great Rythym
By Matt Abdallah
For someone that wants to learn to play blues guitar, becoming a better rhythm guitarist is just as critical as becoming a better lead guitarist.

Just sit for a moment and think of a few guitar riffs from songs you like, it wouldn’t be surprising if quite a few of them are rhythm rather than lead parts.

In quite a few songs, it is a lot easier to drop the lead parts from the song than the rhythm parts because as cool and interesting as many guitar solos are, it is often the rhythm parts which can really make a song. Besides odds are you will spend far more time playing rhythm parts a lot more often than lead parts, so it isn’t something to neglect.

1. Practice

This can’t be stressed enough, if you want to be a better guitarist, you need to practice. Don’t neglect to use a metronome, to build up your sense of timing and rhythm. This is often neglected by guitarists, not just by beginners, but also by people who have played for years. Music is about the right note at the right time, just playing the right note isn’t enough and it can be a very noticeable flaw in a guitarist’s playing.

2. Making Mistakes

The key to making mistakes is to keep playing as if nothing happened. As long as you do not freeze up or stop playing at a mistake, the listener will not notice it most of the time.

While playing the right note at the wrong time is very noticeable, playing the wrong note at the right time is often less so, as long as it isn’t something extremely dissonant.

Even on albums of professional guitarists, it isn’t unheard of for there to be little mistakes like hitting the wrong chord. However, they kept playing ______continued.

continued______ and stayed in rhythm, so those types of mistakes are pretty unnoticeable.

If it is a really terrible sounding mistake, keep playing and forget about it.You can’t make a mistake un-happen, but if you stop playing or let it psyche you out, that will be a lot more noticeable than any minor mistake you make while playing.

3. Do Things Intentionally

A lot of newer guitarists and quite a few more seasoned ones do nothing, except strum all six strings of the guitar for everything. Sometimes that is the effect you want, but it should be a conscious choice, not the limit of your abilities.

There is a difference between playing loose and playing sloppy. Strumming is usually done fairly loosely, but there is still quite a bit of control that should be involved.

If you are aiming to hit Strings 1 and 2 while strumming, you might get String 3 every now and then, just because you are playing loosely. However, you should not be hitting String 6 or missing Strings 1 and 2 completely. There still should be some intent behind what strings are being struck with each strum, it shouldn’t be a matter of randomly hitting strings while holding a chord.

4. Strive to impress

While you learn to play blues guitar, it should become quite evident that generally the lead instrument (whether it is a guitarist, a vocalist, or something else) is not the main focus.

Just because the rhythm part is unglamorous much of the time doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to do it well.

Sometimes it is better to let someone else have the limelight and support them as best you can, they might return the favor in a different song for you.
