For me there’s not any fixed way to draft a song but in this article I’m going to give you 1 or 2 tips that have helped me out over the years.
I’m no John Lennon but I’ve written a song each day for the year and even sold a pair on Taxi.com
So let’s go, an ordinary Joe guide to songwriting :- )
Fill up your tank – this is my number one secret weapon to be truthful. Fundamentally what I do is go through the tune book of a great writer and play all I know. I sing my tiny heart out and take a look at the chord structures. Then when it comes times for me to draft the ideas just pop out and I start to write in the same style as the band I was listening to.
Get a beat maker – this is a software too for your computer that let’s you become a Beat Creator and is full of all sorts of beats and even Drum and bass loops. I like Beat making programs because you can get an understanding of what the song will sound like with a full band arrangement.
Edit – The best way to make a song better is to work on only one at a time and then let it sit for a day after you have finished it. If you try and record right away your ears will be too use to it and you will not be well placed to make any changes for the better. A day or so later and all those stupid lyrics and bad chord will pop out to you without effort.
Think about a name – the easiest songs I ever write are those where I’ve a truly catchy and memorable title because those are the ones that seems to explode with ideas. Keep a notebook with you and write down any cool phrases you hear.
Final Thoughts,
I hope my tips are going to help you make some great music, the right way to be a great songwriter is to stop thinking about it and just do it every day. Good luck!
