On blues guitar video: Blues Guitar Lessons - Striking The Right NotesBy Logan Young The most amazing thing you will learn when you start your blues lessons is that - a group of blues musicians who have never met before can easily play together and jam with ease. This is because they know the basic structure of the blues song form. With practice on their rhythm and through some haunting solos, they are easily able to sync with each other. That's the magic of the blues music form. The most popular form of blues music is the 12 bar Blues, which means that the song has 12 measures in a particular chord sequence. At the time of playing, this form is repeated for each verse that is played till the end of the song. You will hear about 8 bar, 16 bar and 24 bar blues, but the one that is played the most is the 12 bar blues. Your first blues lessons will tell you that it is not essential to be fast to be a good blues player. It is more important to know the right note to play at the right time. However, before you think of solos and their structure, the knowledge of a basic set of blues licks will help. A lick can be defined as a group of notes with special meaning that blend together to express an emotion. Your solo will consist of a base of these licks. You can use a combination of different licks, adding notes as you go, to play your solo. The 12-Bar Blues Chords, Notes And Scales You will need a minimum of three different chords to play basic 12 bar blues. For instance, in the key of E - you will need E7, A7 and B7. You will hear the expressions tonic, subdominant and dominant when these chords are referred to in the blues. These are played as 7th chords in dominant major blues, hence the E7. Actually, your blues lessons will not be too ______continued. Interesting article on blues guitar video: How To Play Blues On The Guitar continued______ different from any other kind of lesson. However, what differentiates the blues is the basic feel, and the type of notes and chords you use. As with any kind of playing, you will need lots of practice and patience to get where you want. In the blues rhythmic feel, each beat is broken into two equal pieces by the eighth notes. While playing swing, the same thing is broken into three pieces, to create the eighth note triplet. In the blues, you will therefore be playing four beats to each measure. Strumming the E7 chord is one way to practice blues guitar. You also need to learn to play dominant seventh chords, which use the root, third, fifth and flattened seventh of a major scale. The major third and minor seventh make the dominant seventh chords very attractive. Remember that in the blues, every chord can be dominant seventh unlike in other kinds of music. Why Blues Music Is Blue As far as blues scales are concerned, they are distinctive from those in other types of music. The root, flattened third, fourth, flattened fifth (or raised fourth), fifth, and flattened seventh of the major scale compose the minor blues scales. The root, second, flattened third, third, fifth, and sixth degrees of the major scale compose the major blues scale. Even though the chords are all dominant seventh with a major third, the scale has a flattened third. It is this particular combination of chord and scale that distinguishes blues music, and the flattened third combines with the flattened fifth to makes blues music blue. You will realize when you begin your blues music lessons that learning is easy. Although it takes many years of practice to gain mastery over this beautiful music form.
